Sustainability in Railroad and shipbuilding

Shipbuilding is working on lower-emission propulsion systems using new energy and fuel sources. Green hydrogen, a key to the energy transition, offers solutions for heavy-duty maritime transport – from container ships to ferries. Methanol and ammonia as alternative fuels are also gaining importance, while hybrid propulsion systems and shore power systems are reducing emissions in port operations.

The electrification of rail transport is increasingly enabling climate-neutral transport using renewable energies. However, the challenge lies in making rail journeys more sustainable, cheaper, faster, and more comfortable through innovation. New technologies such as magnetic levitation, hyperloop technology, and autonomous trains offer significant opportunities for transformation – hydrogen trains also provide an emission-free alternative on routes that are not yet electrified.
The sustainable design of ships and trains relies on material-saving design, new lightweight materials, and energy-efficient manufacturing processes. In addition to emission-free propulsion technologies, the circular economy of components and materials is increasingly being considered as early as the design and development phase. Ideally, the material used in each project should remain entirely in the circular economy at the end of its life cycle. Accelerating and parallelizing process steps, increasing process quality, and just-in-time delivery of assembly parts improve manufacturing efficiency. How will the industry transport 10 billion people and growing volumes of goods in a way that planetary boundaries can handle? With a globally expanding middle class, travel and freight traffic on rail and waterways is increasing to such an extent that the industry must offer more climate-neutral and circular transport solutions.

The industry includes, for example, shipbuilding, boat and yacht building, and rail vehicle manufacturing.
