Sustainability in Cultural Economy

You are in a dilemma: museums, theaters and cultural institutions have a high degree of positive impact by conveying art and culture as vital goods – and at the same time their operations put a strain on the climate. There is an opportunity for transformation in this: As communicators, cultural companies stimulate social discourse through plays, concerts or exhibitions, provide impulses and spread visions of a better future. As transformers, they take on model character and can promote sustainability and climate protection with their programs.

Many facilities are making themselves climate-fit – even under cost pressure. Enablers are modern technologies based on renewable energies, smart building management and intelligent logistics and process planning to reduce energy and resource consumption, as well as sustainable measures in cafeterias and shops.
As places of encounter and education, cultural companies bear responsibility for the transformation towards sustainability. Many show good examples of how one’s own actions have a positive effect on the audience. Cultural companies can also practice social sustainability towards employees through fair pay, family-friendliness, diversity and modern work cultures.

The industry includes, for example, artistic and entertainment activities, the operation of cultural and entertainment facilities, theater and concerts. Leisure facilities in the broader sense such as theme parks and zoos are assigned to the “leisure industry” sector.
