Feed production is increasingly geared towards animal welfare. The most important raw materials in the largely industrial compound, concentrate and special feed production are soy, wheat, corn and rapeseed, but also meat and animal by-products. A large portion of the world’s agricultural land is used solely for animal feed. Serious consequences arise, for example, if rainforests are cut down to grow soy.
The industry therefore strives to source soy in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. It avoids pesticides and fertilizers in domestic cultivation and increasingly uses plant-based raw materials, insect proteins or residues from food production – including for pet food. This reduces the use of resources and cultivated areas. Feeding according to needs reduces excess nutrients and negative environmental influences.
