Sustainability in Food Retailing

Supermarkets, discounters, organic shops and online providers are powerful actors in the transformation of the food industry. At the point of sale between end consumers and producers, the industry provides important impetus in both directions – for more sustainable eating styles and production methods. The concentration of dealers in the market and the growing importance of own brands are increasing the influence on the production and production conditions.

The industry can better inform its customers and help them make more conscious purchasing decisions in many ways: through eco and CO2 labels, advertising sustainable product properties on packaging, displays, promotions and information about fair purchasing. The industry is leveraging transformative potential by converting product ranges towards meat, milk substitutes and animal welfare products.
Food retail is transforming through more energy efficiency in lighting and cooling in stores, through the generation of solar power on warehouse and store roofs, through climate-friendly logistics and donation programs for surplus food. Responsibility arises from the great influence on production conditions and consumer behavior. Some companies are leading the way with ambitious strategies and flagship examples. Given the enormous influence of food on climate, biodiversity and resource consumption, there is room for more.

The industry includes, for example, stationary retail and online delivery services for local food and beverage supplies, gas station shops and the beverage trade. Manufacturers and producers are located in the corresponding sectors of the nutrition transformation sector.
