Sustainability in Transportation and Logistics

Freight transport is a crucial lever in the transformation. Although vehicles are becoming more and more efficient, the unbroken volume growth is eating up the fuel profits in the rebound effect. Online trading in particular with the resulting returns increases delivery volumes.

The industry is still leaving a lot of sustainability potential on the table if the logistics service cannot yet be provided consistently without emissions. Transport and logistics companies are therefore setting future-oriented impulses by using emission-free vehicles such as SAF-powered air freight, electric and hydrogen trucks or cargo bikes in order to make their transport solutions more climate and environmentally friendly. This can also be achieved with better utilized vehicles and digital tools to avoid empty runs or for the intelligent control of seamless micrologistics solutions.
In total, freight logistics causes a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. This means that transport and logistics companies have an essential role to play in the climate crisis. When operating warehouses and shipping points, there are options, for example, to use areas and roofs to generate renewable energy. The growing logistics industry is an important employer for which it is important to design jobs fairly and sustainably. Autonomous driving technologies can, for example, help alleviate the shortage of skilled workers.

The industry includes, for example, freight forwarding and freight transport by rail, road, pipe, sea, water, air, logistics and warehousing as well as postal and parcel services. Mobility service providers for individual travel are assigned to the “mobility services” industry.
