Sustainability in Electrical Engineering and Electronics

Electrical engineering and electronics are the nervous system in the energy transition. Whether in e-mobility, renewable energies, charging infrastructure, LED lighting or smart grids: components from electrical engineering and electronics enable innovations for the switch from fossil to electricity-based applications. Manufacturers in the industry therefore have great leverage for climate protection and a cost-effective, efficient energy supply.

In addition to this great impact potential, there are further opportunities for the industry itself: When it comes to the selection of materials and components, component placement and hardware structure, manufacturers of electrical engineering, electronic devices and lights are driving forces for a successful circular economy. Manufacturers are driving sustainability by using circular raw materials and recyclates, relying on easy-to-maintain design and improving the robustness and longevity of their products, incorporating intelligent energy-saving features and enabling systems for take-back and recycling of components.
As an innovative industry with high research and development expenditure, electrical engineering is driving transformation through the development of efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for intelligent electricity-based solutions, particularly in the areas of digitalization and decentralized energy generation and networking technology.

The industry includes, for example, the production of electrical and electronic devices and components, wires, cables and lights. The production of consumer electronics is part of the “consumer electronics” industry and data processing devices are part of the “information technology” industry.
