Sustainability in Tourism

Industry surveys show: More and more people are rejecting mass tourism and are opting for sustainable travel. Whether by e-bike across the Alps, the night train to the Adriatic or by Interrail through Europe – greener travel. Tour operators are increasingly trying to offer their guests a more climate-friendly holiday. Long-distance travel remains important for cultural exchange and creates memories for a lifetime. When airplanes and cruise ships are used, tour operators are particularly challenged. For example, it’s about real technological progress, the credibility of CO2 compensation and improving local living conditions.

Income from responsible tourism helps locals to better protect nature in the destination countries. Travel providers are drivers of sustainable development when they promote fair working conditions and profit sharing for the local population and local partners. They can bring the topic of sustainability closer to travelers by enabling appreciative experiences with local culture and nature.
The demands for sustainable travel are increasing. Given the growing world population with a globally emerging middle class, tourism will increase significantly. Tourism products worldwide must become more sustainable as quickly as possible. Tour operators have a responsibility to continue to offer unique tourism, but to prevent serious ecological and social consequential damage throughout the entire travel chain. In the best case scenario, the industry even manages to switch from “Do less harm” to “Do more good” if, for example, local accommodation is enabled to generate more energy than is consumed by using renewable energies.

The industry includes, for example, travel agencies and tour operators. Hotels and other accommodation establishments are assigned to industry 88 “accommodation industry” and general mobility services are assigned to industry 85.
