Sustainability in Accommodation Industry

Whether it’s a tree house, hostel or star hotel: sustainability is becoming an increasingly important decision criterion when choosing accommodation. Hoteliers are driving the transformation forward by running their businesses in an increasingly ecologically compatible, resource-saving and socially fair manner. This starts with the construction of the buildings and the furnishing of the rooms and extends to energy-efficient operation based on renewable energies. There are also environmental measures in administration through digital processes.

Even if there is still no uniform standard for sustainability commitment in the industry, the approaches are numerous. For example, guests can forego daily room cleaning and towel changes and thus donate money to regional sustainability projects. Other important measures include, for example, offering regional and seasonal cuisine, minimizing food waste, using tap water instead of plastic bottles and a fair working atmosphere for employees.
Accommodation close to nature in wooden houses, campsites or on houseboats provides a counterpoint to mass tourism. However, the greatest climate lever lies in the mobility of guests. Businesses can encourage guests to use climate-friendly alternatives and offer charging stations for electric cars. Status and reward points in loyalty programs, e.g. for business travelers, could be linked to a climate-friendly journey.

The industry includes, for example, hotels, inns and guesthouses, holiday homes and holiday apartments, and campsites.
