Sustainability in Aircraft, Railroad and Shipbuilding

Aircraft manufacturers are working on new engines for alternative fuels (Sustainable Aviation Fuels “SAF”) to enable more environmentally friendly flying. They also use electric motors for short-haul flights and hydrogen drives.

Shipbuilding is also working on lower-emission drives using similar energy and fuel sources. Green hydrogen, the hope of the energy transition, shows solutions for heavy-duty transport on ships.

Through the electrification of rail transport, climate-neutral transport can increasingly be realized using renewable energies. But the aim is to make rail journeys more sustainable and at the same time cheaper, faster and more comfortable through innovation. New technologies such as magnetic and hyperloop technology or autonomous trains offer opportunities for transformation.

The sustainable design of aircraft, ships and trains relies on material-saving design, new weight-saving materials and energy-efficient manufacturing processes. In addition to emission-free drive technologies, the cycle of components and materials is increasingly being taken into account in the design and development phase. The material per project should ideally remain completely in the cycle at the end of its life cycle. Accelerating and parallelizing process steps, increasing process quality and just-in-time delivery of assembly parts improves manufacturing efficiency. How will the industry soon transport 10 billion people in a way that the planetary boundaries can support? With a globally growing middle class, global travel, air travel and goods traffic is increasing to such an extent that the industry must offer more climate-neutral and circular transport solutions.

The industry includes, for example, shipbuilding, boat and yacht building, rail vehicle construction, and aircraft and spacecraft construction.
